On October 3, 1951, Bobby Thomson hit the shot herd round the world, a walk off home run allowing the New York Giants to claim the National League pennant and a 5-4 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Thomson’s historic home run was hit to left field off of Dodger’s pitcher Ralph Branca with two men on and the Giants trailing by two at the Polo Grounds. Giants fans rushed the field to help the team celebrate the “Cinderella story” come from behind season.

The Giants were 13 1/2 games behind the Dodgers in mid-August. By October the Giants were tied for first in the division and on their way to the franchise’s first National League playoff appearance after winning 37 of their last 44 games.
The New York Yankees were World Series champions after taking the final series against the Giants in six games. The giants came back to win the World Series played against the Cleveland Indians in 1954.
